No suspects yet in shooting, crash

Police are still searching for suspects in the death of a Geneva Township man after a Christmas Eve crash linked to a gang-related shooting in Aurora, authorities said.

Craig R. Escamilla, 21, died after the green Ford Explorer he was driving crashed about 11:30 a.m. at Galena Boulevard and West Street. Police say the vehicle was involved in a shooting a block away.

"We are working multiple leads at this time. There is no one in custody," Aurora police investigator Angel Nieves said Wednesday at a Kane County coroner's inquest.

Escamilla's death was ruled an accident due to the massive head and chest injuries suffered after he was dragged under the sport utility vehicle.

Police have said the shots were fired near West Street and Downer Place and witnesses saw the SUV speed north on West and crash into a Chevrolet Impala at Galena.

Escamilla was ejected from the driver's seat and pulled under as the vehicle crashed into a fence and stopped on boulders in a residential garden, according to testimony at the inquest.

A bullet hole was found on the passenger's side of the SUV, which is registered to Escamilla's girlfriend, and a revolver was recovered from inside, Nieves said.

An autopsy confirmed Escamilla did not die from gunfire, but a bullet was found in his body, an injury from a shooting about a year earlier, said Loren Carerra, the chief deputy coroner.

Lab tests later found marijuana and cocaine in his system, Carerra said.

Four members of a Hinckley family were in the Impala. They were treated and later released from an Aurora hospital, police have said.
