Architects offer ideas for remodeling Carol Stream center
Carol Stream Park District commissioners got their first look Monday at four possible renovation plans for its community center in Armstrong Park.
Two representatives of Carol Stream-based Williams Architects presented the park board with several options of how to rehab the Aldrin Community Center.
The park district shut down the center's aging Collins Pool in 2006 after discovering leaks on its deck. The building is home to administrative office space and is used during the park board's regular public meetings.
"The fact of the matter is this building either has to be renovated or must come down in the not too distant future," parks Director Arnie Biondo said.
Much of the facility sits on flood-prone property, which officials said limits their ability to expand on the site. Still, the park district's architects suggested the building can be renovated into a two-story structure with options such as a gymnasium, track, fitness rooms and office space.
Parks officials did not speak of any timetables for when they'd consider renovating Aldrin or how much such a project would cost. Biondo said the park district will wait on the results of a community survey to be conducted later this year before proceeding with any renovation plans.
