Cubs trade Pagan for Mets prospects
The Cubs sent outfielder Angel Pagan to the New York Mets for a pair of minor-league prospects -- right-handed pitcher Ryan Meyers and outfielder Corey Coles.
Meyers, 22, was 1-4 with 13 saves and a 2.79 ERA in 41 relief appearances between New York's Class A Savannah and Port St. Lucie affiliates in 2007. The 6-foot-5, 204-pound Meyers struck out 55 and walked only 16 in 51¿ innings while limiting opponents to a .229 batting average.
Meyers spent most of the season as the closer with Savannah, where he recorded all 13 saves with a 2.14 ERA. Meyers is 6-19 with 15 saves and a 4.36 ERA in 104 minor-league appearances (26 starts). He was selected by the Mets in the 17th round of the 2003 draft.
Coles, 25, batted .286 with 14 doubles, 1 home run and 31 RBI during three stops in the Mets' minor-league system last year, including his first trips to Double-A and Triple-A. The left-handed batter and thrower spent most of the 2007 season with Class AA Binghamton and batted .296 with a .352 on-base percentage in 66 contests. Coles also played 23 games with Port St. Lucie and nine games with Class AAA New Orleans last year.
Coles earned 2006 Florida State League all-star honors when he batted .341 in 124 games with Port St. Lucie, and a .407 on-base percentage. A career .306 hitter in (452-for-1479) in 397 minor-league games, the 6-foot-2, 181-pound Coles was selected by the Mets in the fifth round of the 2003 draft.
Pagan, acquired by the Cubs from the Mets for a cash consideration in January 2006, batted .255 with 9 home runs and 39 RBI in 148 games with the Cubs in 2006 and 2007.
He batted .264 with 4 home runs and 21 RBI in 71 games before going on the disabled list on Aug. 8 with colitis.
