Fenwick tops Montini
Montini coach Tom Sloan looks forward to playing Fenwick in nonconference boys basketball competition each year, and it's not because Fenwick happens to be his alma mater.
Sloan likes this annual meeting because it gives his team an opportunity to face a higher level of competition from a larger school.
The Broncos played hard in Tuesday's game, but they were overmatched by the host Friars, who rolled early and often to a 74-51 victory in Oak Park.
"We look at it as a learning experience," Sloan said. "Fenwick is a good team. This kind of game exposes the fundamental issues that we need to improve on like blocking out with all five players."
The Friars (10-5) had three players hit double-figure scoring, led by 18 points from Matthew Condron, 16 points off the bench from Wayne Simon and 12 points by John Comfort. The hosts led 24-10 at the end of the first quarter and extended that advantage to 44-24 at halftime as Montini shot only 33.3 percent from the floor.
"(The Broncos) play hard, but we jumped on them early," said Fenwick coach John Quinn.
For Montini offensively, forward Kevin Pope showed a nice touch from the outside, sinking a pair of 3-pointers. The senior finished with 12 points to lead the team.
"They gave me good passes and I had some good looks so I knocked down the shots," Pope said.
Guards Anthony Blashewski and Alex Blashewski chipped in 9 points apiece for the Broncos (8-10), while forward Zach Brash contributed 8 points.
