Crash closes Route 53 lanes as treacherous p.m. rush continues

A car crashed into the median on southbound Route 53 in Elk Grove Village about 2:30 p.m. today, forcing the closure of three lanes and tying up traffic.

A woman, described in her 50s or 60s, suffered minor injuries, Elk Grove Village Fire Lt. Hans Gustavsen said.

Snowy condition sent the Chrysler Sebring from the left lane into the wall, officials said. No other vehicles were involved, and no tickets were issued.

The heavy snowfall has slowed rush hour traffic to a crawl in many area as crews struggle to clear the roads and a spate of spinouts and other accidents are being reported.
