• Trying to decide which college is the best fit, has the best selection of courses and majors for you and the best opportunity for personal growth is a difficult task for most students. Donald Asher wrote "Cool Colleges" as a tool to assist students in finding their best college match. The competitive nature of becoming accepted at the college of your choice is becoming more puzzling and challenging than ever.
• Pam Proctor's "College Hook" guides students on the adventure of self-discovery, confidence building, and marketing which leads to a sparkling admission application.
• Enter the world of marching musicians in a Midwestern high school with Kristen Laine in "American Band." Laine spent the 2004 school year with the 243 member band looking at the program from the students and director's perspectives as the students mature as individuals, musicians and leaders.
• Mike Linderman, a Montana cowboy and reality therapist, offers the "Teen Whisperer" as a tool to help teens and parents communicate. He has worked with truly out of control teens but his methods will help most teens and parents learn about their primary needs and understand themselves.
Many readers come to the Algonquin Area Public Library for a good yarn. Knitters might want to find great yarn patterns and techniques in the New Book Section.
• Barbara Albright's "Natural Knitter: How To Choose, Use, And Knit Natural Fibers from Alpaca to Yak" is a joyful exploration of the world of yarn companies, pattern designers and the ultimate sources of fibers. This is a great excuse to try something new and the patterns are delightful.
• "Simply Baby" by Debbie Bliss offers knitters patterns for hats, socks, sweaters, and information about making creations for infants.
• Susan Guagliumi designed 12 sweaters for adults and children with a variety of interesting details and the common design element of "Knitting Cuff To Cuff."
Fans of Debbie Stoller will be delighted to find she has a new book, "Son Of Stitch'n Bitch," offering crocheted and knitted patterns to please men. From a sweater sporting a skull to a slightly naughty scarf, the patterns are fun.
• Visit your closet or thrift shop for the supplies and pick up Katheryn Tidwell Bieber's "Felt It! Stitch It! Fabulous!" for instructions to transform old sweaters into the latest felted accessories and clothing or decorate felted fabric with needle felted designs. You don't even need to know how to knit to make these creative projects.
