A Kaneland 'no' vote solves nothing
The reason for a yes vote for the Kaneland Building Fund Referendum is clear. Our middle school is already 40 percent over capacity. A yes vote is a yes to additional building space to accommodate our growing student population.
Conversely, a no vote only produces one result: an overcrowded school system which ultimately impacts the quality of the education received by all students within the district. However, there are many who believe that by voting no they are expressing their feelings on other issues such as school funding, village growth, or district decision making.
A no vote will not change the way schools are funded. To do that you would need to lobby your state representative to change state laws relative to school funding.
A no vote will not change the pace of development within your community. If you have a different vision of what your community should look like, you need to become active in your village government.
A no vote will not resolve issues with district decision-making. If you want your issues to be heard, you need to be part of the process: attend a board meeting, participate on a citizens committee, or call the administration and express your opinion.
Unfortunately, there is no comment box on our ballots for explaining our reasoning. Those that can affect change are unable to interpret a no vote as anything but a belief that more space is unnecessary. However, our students do need more space and they need it today. Please vote yes for the Kaneland building referendum on Feb. 5.
