Rabid bat found in Aurora:

Another bat has tested positive for rabies in Kane County, the Kane County Health Department announced Friday. The animal, found in an Aurora home, is the first bat in 2008 to test positive for the disease. In 2007, five bats in Kane County tested positive for rabies. The bat was found in a house on the 900 block of Aurora Avenue on Dec. 28. The health department received the results Thursday. Statewide, there were 113 confirmed cases of rabies in animals in 2007. Bats are Illinois' primary carriers of the potentially fatal disease. Humans can become infected when bitten by a rabid bat or when an infected bat's saliva comes in contact with a person's eye, nose, mouth, a scratch or wound. Rabid bats might not show obvious abnormalities, so all contact with bats should be avoided, health officials said.
