South Elgin couple identified as victims in fatal Batavia crash
Ruben and Elisa Lacsam, a South Elgin couple in their 70s, were identified this afternoon as the victims of Monday night's fatal car crash in Batavia.
Elisa, 70, was driving a 2004 Toyota Camry north on Randall Road about one-half mile south of Main Street at about 9 p.m. when she lost control on the icy pavement and crossed the center median, according to a news release from the Batavia Police Department.
The Camry collided with a 2001 Chrysler Sebring and 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 in the southbound lane, police said.
The driver of the Sebring, Felix Velazquez, 29, of North Aurora, and his young female passenger were taken to Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva for treatment. The three occupants of the Dodge Ram - a man and a woman from North Aurora and a Chicago man - were not injured.
The Camry's passenger, 71-year-old Ruben, was taken to Provena Mercy Center in Aurora but pronounced dead on arrival.
"Road conditions played a major role in this one," Batavia Police Commander Gregory Thrun said. "It was very slippery and road conditions were extremely poor."
Randall Road was closed in both directions for a while after the crash.
