Creator of Illiniwek logo sues for control of image
The man who created the circular, orange-and-blue Chief Illiniwek logo for the University of Illinois is suing to get it back.
Champaign graphic artist Jack Davis sued University of Illinois' board of trustees late last month to regain control of the image he created nearly three decades ago. He also wants the school to stop using the logo.
But a university spokeswoman says the school plans to keep its trademark on the design.
The U of I alum says he sold the logo to the university in 1980 for about $200. He says he allowed the school to use the image as a "permanent symbol of Illinois athletics."
The school did away with the Chief Illiniwek mascot last year after being sanctioned by the NCAA.
