6-year-old boy, man shot during home invasion
A 6-year-old boy and a man were both in critical condition after being shot during what police said appeared to be a home invasion Friday morning on Chicago's West Side.
Interim Police Superintendent Dana Starks said the child was shot in the head and the adult, besides being shot, had been stabbed. A second man was pistol-whipped, he said.
Police were examining the footage from one of the department's cameras that was mounted on a pole on the street about a half block from the apartment building where the incident occurred. They also said they're looking for four individuals who apparently fled in a gold-colored car.
Police found a safe in the apartment that was open and were trying to determine what, if anything, had been taken.
Police said they received a call that shots had been fired about 10:15 a.m. Police Cmdr. Juan Rivera said there was no evidence of forced entry and that it appeared that somebody inside opened the door for the suspects, who then pushed their way inside.
He said that the victims were all related, but police did not discuss their relationship or their names. Police also said that there were initial reports that another child who lived at the residence was missing, but that later they determined he was not there at the time and was, in fact, safe.
The landlord of the 4-story building said the tenants -- two adults and two children -- had been living in the unit for about three months. Nissim Abisdris said he'd been told by one of them that they planned to move out.
The tenants, Abisdris said, were "very nice people" who kept the apartment clean.
The child was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital and the critically injured adult was taken to Stroger Hospital. Police said the man who was pistol-whipped refused treatment.
