West Dundee scraps turn lane on Boncosky Road
If you have ever waited behind a car turning left from eastbound Boncosky Road to Fairhills Drive in West Dundee, chances are you didn't wait long.
That's why trustees Monday unanimously rejected a plan to install a left-turn lane at the intersection.
Village officials said an estimated 12 cars make the maneuver during peak travel hours, not enough to justify the project's $200,000 price tag -- or one-fifth of the village's street and infrastructure improvement fund.
"Certainly, it is not a traffic problem," Village President Larry Keller said. "The relatively low volume of cars seemed like it wasn't a prudent expenditure of money."
Village Administrator Joe Cavallaro said the cost of resurfacing Boncosky Road from Route 31 to the Bluffs of Sleepy Hollow would have ballooned to close to $1 million had trustees approved the turn lane.
"It would have been nice to do, but was not a need to do," Cavallaro said. "The lane would have taken the project from $740,000 to $980,000 because of the need for a retaining wall."
Cavallaro said work on the 2,000 foot stretch of Boncosky Road is scheduled to begin in the fall and is expected to be completed by the Fourth of July holiday.
