Learn about the Lutheran faith at Bethany
Batavia's Bethany Lutheran Church is offering classes on the Lutheran Church for new members and for those interesting in learning more about Lutheran doctrine and tradition. The classes will be taught by the Rev. Steven Srock, senior pastor at Bethany.
Classes will be held at 9:15 a.m. Sundays at the church, 8 S. Lincoln St. in Batavia. "The Lutheran Church" is the topic for Oct. 19, "Faith and Life" is the topic for Oct. 26, "Worship Practices: Then and Now" will be discussed on Nov. 2 and "Grace and Christian Responsibility" on Nov. 9.
There will be a new member reception at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. services on Sunday, Nov. 16. New members will also meet their sponsors at a luncheon.
"We try to match new members with sponsors who are in the same age group, or who have similar interests," said Marsha Schuster, special projects coordinator for Bethany Lutheran Church. "Sponsors can help new members feel comfortable. And new members can always go to their sponsor with questions.
"It's a new exciting time for Bethany," Schuster added. "There's new energy and new opportunities. Our pastor has been here for a year and we have a vicar, Jim Andrews, who specializes in youth ministry."

For high school youth:
Students from private and public high schools throughout the area are invited to participate in Mosaic Sundays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Christ Community Church at Bolcum and Randall roads in St. Charles. Students also participate at the church's other two campuses at 1600 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb and at 40W098 Galena Boulevard in Aurora.
In St. Charles, teens can visit the student wing known as "The Hub," which offers music, a DJ, computer games, pool tables and a snack bar.
According to the church's high school pastor, Jameson Ross, students gather for fun and fellowship under the supervision of adult volunteers. Participants then go to the chapel for study, then form small discussion groups. There is also Wednesday night Bible study in homes in the community for high school students.
"The goal is to have high school students get connected to one another, then come to Jesus and grow in their relationship with him," Ross said. "Our hope is that they begin to walk with Jesus."
