Ogilvy leads Vanderbilt past DePaul 67-54

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- For the second straight game, Vanderbilt junior A.J. Oglivy's free throw shooting was near perfect, as he scored 13 of his game-high 19 points from the line in a 67-54 victory over DePaul on Saturday.

Ogilvy, who entered Wednesday's game against Missouri as a 54-percent free throw shooter for the season, was 13-for-15 Saturday -- after an 11-for-12 outing three days ago.

"We just made a slight adjustment," Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings said. "We pointed out that he needed to do something about keeping his foot down to maintain better balance. He's back to shooting the way he shoots it."

After a sluggish first half, Ogilvy scored 16 points in the second half and rallied the Commodores (7-1), who trailed 28-27 at halftime.

"I was just more aggressive," Oglivy said. "The guys do a great job of trying to look for me inside."

Vanderbilt went ahead for good when Ogilvy hit two free throws with 15:33 left for a 37-36 margin. That sparked a 13-3 run for the Commodores. Ogilvy scored six points during the stretch and Brad Tinsley capped it with a 3-pointer to give Vanderbilt its biggest lead, 48-38, with 10:05 left.

DePaul (5-2) cut the deficit to 53-49 when Jeremiah Kelly nailed a 3-pointer with 4:41 to go. But Vanderbilt ended the game on a 14-5 spurt.

Even with Ogilvy's effort from the free throw line, Vanderbilt shot just 66.7 percent (20-for-30) from the stripe. The Blue Demons, however, were worse. They shot just 35.7 percent (5-for-14) and entered the game shooting 55 percent for the season.

"Our free throw shooting has been horrible all year," DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright said. "Not bad, it's horrible."

Jeffery Taylor scored 18 points for Vanderbilt, which outrebounded the Blue Demons 41-33.

Will Walker had 17 points and Michael Bizoukas added 11 for DePaul, which lost its first game since a setback two weeks ago to another Southeastern Conference school -- Tennessee -- on Nov. 22 at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.

Vanderbilt's highly touted freshman, John Jenkins, was walking on crutches after the game. Jenkins, who scored seven points, was stepped on during the game and has a bruised ankle and knee. He is listed as day-to-day.
