Kildeer molesting suspect headed back for treatment

A Kildeer man charged with molesting two young boys at a Lincolnshire tennis club will be returned to a state mental health treatment center, a Lake County judge ruled Thursday.

Paul Olsson, 22, is eligible to be held for up a year in a final attempt to make him mentally fit to stand trial.

Associate Judge Christopher Stride last week found there was enough evidence to support the charges against Olsson, but left open the question of how the case should proceed.

In the more than four years since his arrest, Olsson has refused to cooperate with any court-appointed attorney, and during the same period has been unable to find a private attorney to defend him on his terms.

Olsson has filed numerous motions and lawsuits charging lawyers and judges with conspiring against him and violating rights that only Olsson believes he has.

Assistant State's Attorney Ari Fisz said he believed the state Department of Human Services, where Olsson has been sent for brief stays after three prior findings that he was unfit, should be given the chance to treat him for an extended period.

Assistant Public Defender Keith Grant disagreed, saying Olsson has refused treatment after each commitment and cited the latest psychological report finding him unfit.

"His delusional belief structure that we are all out to get him is cemented beyond anything the Department of Human Services can do," Grant said. "Mr. Olsson's delusions are fixed and fast."

Grant said he was not arguing for Olsson's release from custody, but did not believe anything short of a significant period of residential treatment much longer than a year would be successful in Olsson's case.

Stride said he believed the state treatment center deserved another chance to treat Olsson and would give them up to a year to see if they could improve his condition.

He urged Olsson to take advantage of the treatment programs that will be offered to him and ordered a report on Olsson's progress to be filed by March 12.

Olsson remains charged with predatory sexual assault of a child and aggravated criminal sexual abuse against two boys, a 6-year-old and a 10-year-old, during the summers of 2004 and 2005.
