Man killed after train hits car in Bensenville

One person was killed when a westbound Metra train struck a vehicle at a crossing in Bensenville about 5:30 p.m. Thursday night.

Andres Martinez, 63, of Franklin Park, was in his car with a second person at the York Road crossing as the Milwaukee District West Line express train on its way from Union Station to Elgin approached the Bensenville station and hit the vehicle, DuPage County Coroner's Office officials said.

Martinez was killed in the accident and the second passenger, a female, was taken to a nearby hospital in a stable condition.

The vehicle was pushed about 1,000 feet west of the level crossing, officials said.

It's unknown who was driving the vehicle and how it became stranded at the crossing. There were no injuries on the train, officials said.

Service on the train was halted for about 2½ hours while the scene was investigated.

The incident remains under investigation by the Bensenville police.
