East Peoria police shoot man armed with sword

EAST PEORIA -- Police in East Peoria say they shot a man armed with a sword and knife after he reportedly ignored demands to drop the weapons and kept coming at the officers.

East Peoria Police Chief Ed Papis said officers went to a residence about 6 p.m. Tuesday after a neighbor called 911 about an apparently suicidal man.

Papis says the officers were then confronted by the man, who refused to drop his weapons.

The chief says the officers had no alternative but to shoot the man twice.

The man, who has not been identified, was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria with life-threatening injuries. His condition was not immediately available.

Papis says the incident is under investigation.
