Fire's Klopas still discreet in search for a new coach

The search for a new Fire coach continues, and technical director Frank Klopas insists on taking his time to make the right choice.

"It is a very important decision," Klopas said Monday from Los Angeles, home of team owner Andrew Hauptman and site of team budget meetings, "and even though you want to get someone in here quick, you've got to make the right decision."

As always, Klopas was discreet about the search, saying he's taking his time and doing his homework on all candidates. The Washington Post's Steven Goff recently reported Klopas has talked with Real Salt Lake assistant coach Robin Fraser and New York Red Bulls interim coach Richie Williams about the job, and Klopas said he has interviewed, "one of the two."

Klopas said his choice could come from MLS, the college ranks or overseas. What matters is that the new coach adheres to the team credo: Tradition. Honor. Passion.

"We want to make sure whoever the person is can continue that philosophy," he said.

Noting the MLS Draft Combine is scheduled for Jan. 8-12 with the draft Jan. 14, Klopas said, "Ideally you say end of the year would be great" for hiring a coach.

With the departure of Cuauhtemoc Blanco, the team's designated player spot is open. Asked if the Fire's needs a DP in order to win a championship, he answered, "Not really."

However, he added, "A DP can make a difference if it's the right one."
