Police: Mundelein teen shot out car window with BB gun, injuring driver

A Mundelein teen is being held on $100,000 bond after shooting a BB gun at a car and wounding its driver, authorities said.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Patricia Fix said Anthony Smith, 17, is charged with aggravated battery, reckless conduct and criminal damage to property. Fix said Smith, of the 200 block of Wilton Lane, and three male juveniles took a BB gun and began firing at random targets about 6 p.m. Saturday. The four used the gun to shoot out a window in a car parked on Mainer Drive and also sprayed the siding of a house on Prospect Avenue with BBs, Fix said.

A 19-year-old Mundelein man suffered cuts from flying glass when the driver's-side window of a car he was driving on Rouse Street was shattered by a BB fired by the group, Fix said.

Smith and the juveniles were arrested a short time later, Fix said, and the injured driver did not require hospitalization.

The juveniles were referred to the Depke Criminal Justice Center in Vernon Hills, Fix said, and Smith appeared Sunday for a bond hearing before Associate Judge Veronica O'Malley. O'Malley set Smith's bond, which requires him to post $10,000 in cash to be released, and ordered him to appear in court again Dec. 2.

Court records show Smith also is facing misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass to land and is currently on probation for theft and on court supervision for underage consumption of alcohol.

Fix said Smith faces a maximum of five years in prison if convicted in the current case against him.
