Pedestrian dies after walking in front of car in Gurnee
A 55-year-old man died Saturday night after he walked in front of a car on a busy Gurnee thoroughfare, authorities said.
Larry Polejewski, of the 900 block of Mayfield Drive in Round Lake, died from multiple trauma injuries, Lake County Coroner Richard Keller said Sunday.
Gurnee police Cmdr. William Meyer said officers were summoned to the scene at 6:05 p.m.
Meyer said Polejewski apparently stepped in front of the 2003 Ford Crown Victoria driven by a 72-year-old man from downstate Collinsville, who had exited a driveway onto westbound Route 132, also called Grand Avenue.
Reports state the driver told police Polejewski "came out of nowhere." Meyer said Polejewski was struck by the car's front right side and that the driver had no time to take evasive action.
Several emergency calls were placed after witnesses observed the crash near Route 132 and Dilley's Road, in the vicinity of Grand Hotel & Suites.
Meyer said Polejewski was talking to authorities before paramedics brought him to the hospital, where he died more than five hours later. He was pronounced dead at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville at 11:45 p.m. Saturday.
Meyer said police are investigating the incident, but no charges are expected against the driver.
