Aurora man hospitalized after shooting himself

An Aurora man shot himself Wednesday morning after a dispute with his former girlfriend, police said.

The 19-year-old was in serious but stable condition at an area hospital by midafternoon, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest, according to city spokesman Dan Ferrelli. There were no other injuries.

Police said the man showed up just before 9:15 a.m. at the home of his former girlfriend in the 1500 block of Limerick Drive on the city's northeast side and asked her to come out of the house. She refused and the man went into the backyard and fired several shots in the air before turning the gun on himself.

The man returned to the front of the home and collapsed in the driveway where police found him when they arrived in response to a domestic disturbance call from someone at the home.

Aurora's domestic violence unit and general assignment detectives are investigating.
