Staples to open in Glen Ellyn

Staples, the office superstore, is expected to open in Glen Ellyn next year.

It will be located in Market Plaza Shopping Center, on the south side of Roosevelt Road between Park Boulevard and Main Street.

The 20,000-square-foot store will combine the spaces of earlier tenants T's Pasta Beef & More and Murray's Discount Auto Parts. Sherwin Williams also will be relocated during the process so Staples can use their area.

"This is a retail niche that has not been serving the market for many years, and we all have had to leave town to purchase our office supplies," Glen Ellyn Economic Development Corporation's Executive Director Janie Patch said. "It's been a great inconvenience as well as a loss of sales tax revenue."

The store's address is to be determined. Staples will open by late spring or early summer of 2009.

Several years ago, Staples was considering setting up shop at Glen Ellyn Crossing shopping center, but plans didn't pan out.

Now, Patch said, Staples is looking to expand in the area.

"It's finally come to fruition," Patch said. "We feel it's well positioned, it's perfect timing and we are looking forward to the new business opening here."

Market Plaza ownership also has been working with Glen Ellyn's staff on improvement plans for the shopping center, including improvements to the parking lot and renovations at various locations. The plans will come through the village board in the near future and must be approved before work on the center begins.
