Legislators have right idea on guns
Steve Riedner's Dec. 19 letter to the editor was confusing.
Mr. Riedner claims that Sen. Dick Durbin recently announced a new gun law, but a search of the Library of Congress Web site shows that the senator has not introduced any new gun-related legislation this year.
Perhaps Mr. Riedner was referring to the Nov. 27 Daily Herald article, "Gun control not a partisan issue for some lawmakers."
This article noted that Sen. Durbin was awarded the 2007 Abraham Lincoln Award from the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence. It also mentioned a proposal by Congressman Mark Kirk to close loopholes that shield people when they provide guns to gang members and criminals.
Democrats like Sen. Durbin and Republicans like Congressman Kirk agree that keeping guns out of the hands of gang members and criminals is a good idea, and I agree as well.
If more people could agree on common sense ideas like this, our streets would be safer.
