Lake County ballots to have touch of Green

Some Lake County voters tired of Democrats and Republicans at the local level can take a different path in the February primary election.

Two Green Party candidates have filed to be on the ballot in Lake County Board races in the Waukegan and Libertyville areas. Candidates had until 5 p.m. Monday to submit documents with the county clerk's office to make their bids official.

Green Party spokesman Patrick Kelly said Monday there is a level of unhappiness with the Democrats and Republicans in Illinois. He said a victory by county-level candidates in the November general election would elevate the Green Party.

"In general, we're very excited the Green Party is expanding," Kelly said. "It's expanding beyond just the people who show up at our meetings."

David M. Serdar of Libertyville, who couldn't be reached for comment, will be on the Feb. 2, 2010, primary ballot as a Green Party candidate in county board District 15. The district covers the Libertyville area.

Also running in the District 15 county board primary are Republican incumbent Carol Calabresa and Democrat Delfino "Del" Parra, both of Libertyville. If there are no primary write-in victories, Calabresa, Parra and Serdar would face off in the November general election.

Waukegan's Kevin Gartley, who could not be reached for comment, will represent the Green Party on the county board District 8 primary ballot. That district serves the Waukegan area.

Although there won't be any Republicans on the ballot, Waukegan Democrats Bill Durkin Jr. and Rose M. Staben will compete in the District 8 primary. Either Durkin or Staben would be expected to face Gartley in November.

Republican, Green and Democrat are the three political parties qualified for Illinois ballots covering every partisan race. Voters must declare themselves with one of the parties in the primary.

Up for election across Lake County in 2010 are the following: clerk, regional superintendent of schools, sheriff and treasurer. County board seats up for grabs in 2010 serve the 4th, 7th, 8th, 13th, 15th, 18th, 19th, 21st and 23rd districts.

Perhaps the most primary excitement will be for three new judgeships serving Lake County circuit court.

Democrats Michael J. Perillo Jr. of Grayslake and Edward C. Abderholden of Antioch will compete in the 19th Judicial Circuit's Sixth Subcircuit. In the Fourth Subcircuit, the battle will be between Democrats Dwayne Douglas of Highland Park, Christopher M. Kennedy of Libertyville, Mark L. Levitt of Deerfield and Jeremy Cowen Schwartz of Highland Park.

In the 19th Judicial Circuit's Fifth Subcircuit, the Republicans will have a contested primary between Diane E. Winter of Lake Barrington and Peter John Curielli of Tower Lakes.

One of the few contested county board primaries will be in District 19, which covers the Lake Zurich area. Incumbent Craig W. Taylor and Dave Weisz, both Lake Zurich residents, will compete in the Republican primary in February.

John T. Krempotic and Douglas R. Roberts are running in the Democratic primary for sheriff.

Two seats on the North Shore Sanitary District board, representing the 1st and 4th wards, also will be on the ballot. Democrats Preston P. Carter and Sharon K. Carmody will square off in the Ward 1 primary, while Republicans Alan G. Santi and James E. Swarthout make up a contested Ward 4 primary.

Several state- and federal-level political offices will be up for election in 2010 as well.
