Learn how holidays are celebrated around the world

People from around the world have made their homes in the Elgin area. They brought with them beliefs and traditions from their countries of origin, giving the Elgin community a rich diversity, which is now part of our cultural heritage.

Bring your group to the Elgin Public Museum's culturally inclusive winter holiday program, "Touching on Traditions," which features displays and objects of traditional holiday significance from more than 40 countries.

The museum education staff offers group programs for schools, Scouts, clubs, church and adult groups, available beginning Tuesday, Dec. 1. Bring your group to the exhibition as your guide describes traditions, stories and greetings of winter holidays from around the world.

They show how winter holidays such as Christmas is celebrated in different countries - sometimes in familiar ways and other times not-so-familiar - as well as Hanukkah, Diwali and the new year.

Also, encounter traditions you may never have heard of before, such as Thailand's Loi Krathong.

For details, call the Elgin Public Museum at (847) 741-6655. All group programs require registration. Transportation can be arranged by contacting the outreach Touching on Traditions program.
