Inadvertent Halloween treat: Round Lake Beach man's wedding ring

For Richard Farner, Halloween was definitely more trick than treat.

That's because the 59-year-old resident of Round Lake Beach lost his 40-year-old wedding ring inside one of the trick or treat bags while passing out candy in the 100 block of Clarendon Drive Saturday.

"It was on my finger when I started passing out candy at noon Saturday, and gone when I was done at 5 (p.m.)," he said. "It's bothering me, yeah. I haven't had it off my hand in 39 years."

He said the ring has become loose recently because he's dropped some weight over the last five or so months. So he thinks the ring simply fell off his finger during the candy-passing.

"We've looked everywhere in the house and nothing, so it has to be in someone's trick-or-treat bag," he said. "It's really a plain gold ring worth very little monetarily, but worth a lot in memories for me."

He's hoping one of the 40 or so costumed kids or parents who knocked on his door Saturday will find the ring in the bottom of a trick-or-treat bag, hear about the situation, and contact him at (847) 740-4323.

"I'm just really hoping someone will return it," he said. "It was well worn and not worth much - just a simple gold ring - but the memories that go along with it are important to me."
