2 Aurora men guilty in murder of Naperville man

Two Aurora men are facing between 20 and 60 years in prison for their parts in an armed robbery that resulted in the death of a Naperville man.

Cherrod Moore, 29, and Courtney Mayes, 22, were each found guilty of first-degree murder by Will County Circuit Judge Richard Schoenstedt following a bench trial Wednesday in the slaying of 23-year-old John D. Rosales, authorities said.

The two were convicted of helping plan a robbery on April 1, 2008, at the victim's residence at 2511 Sheehan Drive in Naperville, according to a release from Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow.

Both men were in Rosales' home playing video games when two other men allegedly stormed through the door and demanded money and drugs from Rosales. Rosales was shot in the neck when he refused.

Moore and Mayes initially called 911 and told Naperville police they were innocent bystanders. They later admitted they had met with others to plan the robbery.

Sentencing for Moore and Mayes is slated for Jan. 8. State sentencing guidelines for murder convictions require defendants to serve their full term behind bars.

Two other men, Reginald Chandler-Martin and Tyrell Jackson, are awaiting trial on murder charges. Authorities say both men had guns when they stormed Rosales' townhouse, but they believe Jackson fired the shot that mortally wounded the victim.

A fifth man, Justin Harper, pleaded guilty to armed robbery and was sentenced to five years in prison. Harper provided a .22-caliber handgun that was not fired in the crime, authorities said. He has been cooperating with investigators.

Testimony Harper provided about planning the crime and disposal of the weapons following the robbery was used in the trial of Mayes and Moore, state's attorney spokesman Chuck Pelkie said.
