Naperville cops: Aurora man's mugging a hoax

An Aurora man who claimed he was stabbed and beaten during an armed robbery at a Naperville restaurant last week is now accused of making up the assault.

Esteban Rodriguez, 23, of the 900 block of Schomer Road in Aurora, told police he was attacked during an attempted armed robbery at about 2 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, in the parking lot of the Key Wester restaurant, on the 1900 block of Glacier Park Drive in Naperville.

However, officials announced Thursday that, following an investigation into the incident, detectives learned the attack never occurred, and Rodriguez had provided false information to police.

The DuPage County State's Attorney's office and Naperville police filed charges of attempting to file a false police report, a Class A misdemeanor that could put Rodriquez behind bars for up to three years, officials said.

Rodriquez was arrested on Wednesday. He was released after posting 10 percent of the $1,000 bond, officials said, and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 24 to answer charges.
