Elgin man denies shooting at police
An Elgin man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges he opened fire on two police officers last summer.
Victor Nava, 21, of the 500 block of Trinity Terrace, was indicted in August on four counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the July 11 shooting in Elgin.
Police said Nava fired at the officers but missed at about 2 a.m. as they investigated a disturbance on the 300 block of North Spring Street. He was chased down and captured nearby.
If convicted of attempted murder, Nava could be sentenced to as many as 30 years in prison, possibly more if he qualifies for an extended term because of his criminal background. He has been convicted of theft, battery and resisting police, according to Kane County court records.
Nava, whose next court date is Nov. 18, remained in jail Wednesday on $200,000 bond. His attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.
