Lakes patiently claims regional victory
It was worth the wait for the Lakes boys soccer team.
The Eagles waited an extra day to play their final because of all the recent rain, which made the Lakes field unplayable on Friday.
The game was moved to the artificial turf at Grayslake Central on Saturday morning.
The third-seeded Eagles responded by claiming a 4-0 victory over No. 11 Grayslake North 4-0 for the program's regional title.
Lakes got the ball rolling with an important goal late in the first half.
"Getting a goal before half helped us, because it was tense out there," said Lakes coach Kevin Kullby.
"You just want to get goals from other people, and everything depends on Steve Korosis. When his game is on, he's very difficult to handle. He picked his moments and made it look good."
Korosis had a goal and an assist. Joel DeGrave, Jonathan Stanley and Nathan McMahon scored the others. Mitchell Post picked up the other 2 assists.
DeGrave got the Eagles going with the opening goal in the 38th minute, finishing a loose ball after Post blasted a shot off the hands off Richard Klarck.
Stanley and McMahon scored three minutes apart early in the second half and Korosis finsihed the scoring in the 62nd minute.
Eagles keeper Ben Goforth registered his ninth shutout and made 4 stops.
Lakes (11-6-6) next takes on Marmion Academy at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Hampshire sectional semifinal.
Marmion defeated Johnsburg 2-1 and captured the Burlington Central regional championship.
