Iowa Central handles Harper

FT. DODGE, Iowa - A series of mistakes ranging from a missed field goal to killer penalties aided host Iowa Central to a 42-7 win over struggling Harper at Dodger Stadium on Sunday.

The loss dropped the Hawks to 2-4 in both overall and Midwest Football Conference play.

The host Tritons (4-2, 3-2) got on the board first on their second drive when Curtis Hubbell caught a backdoor screen from QB Terrance Johnson (4-for-9 passing, 100 yards) on a third-and-9 and proceeded to take it in for a 24-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

From that point on, mistakes made went a long way towards determining this game.

First, a 5-yard false start penalty helped stall a drive that had started at the Tritons' 13-yard line, and Keith Wilson ended up missing on a 35-yard field goal attempt.

Then a 15-yard illegal participation penalty nullified a partially blocked punt that would have had the Hawks at midfield. Instead, two plays later Iowa Central's Wilmont Wellington (25 carries, 156 yards) produced a 37-yard TD run to make it 14-0.

At the start of the second half, the Tritons converted on a third-and-11, using a 43 yard Johnson-to-Hubble connection. The Triton QB scored from the 22 three plays later.

Harper got on the scoreboard when Pat Czerwiec (16 for 25, 156 yards) connected with Dello Davis on a 24-yard score to get the Hawks to within 20-7 with 9:30 left in the third.

But Iowa Central put the game out of reach by capping off its next two drives with 7-yard TD runs by Johnson and Wellington. Darrelynn Dunn closed out the scoring with a 1 yard run that made it 42-7 with 1:16 left.
