A tip for burglars: Don't leave your wallet behind

BELLEVILLE -- Investigators say a suspect in a southwestern Illinois home burglary accidentally made himself easy to find by leaving his wallet behind.

Nineteen-year-old Joshua Winters was arrested in Monday's robbery near Belleville after investigators allegedly tracked him down using the ID card found in his wallet at the break-in.

Authorities say the homeowner interrupted the burglary, then found a wallet inside his ransacked house.

Capt. Steve Johnson of the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department says the wallet made for what he calls a "rare type of investigation where we did not need Sherlock Holmes to help solve it."

Winters is charged with residential burglary.

He's jailed on $40,000 bond. Winters doesn't have a listed home telephone number.
