Kevin Bacon bringing band to Metropolis

Six degrees of ...

OK, well-known actors who launch music careers usually elicit snickers. But the Bacon Brothers, the rock band led by actor Kevin Bacon and his brother, film composer Michael Bacon, have been going strong for 14 years now. In other words, they're no Dogstar.

The Bacon Brothers will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, 111 W. Campbell St., Arlington Heights. Tickets are sold out but you may be able to find some online. Call (847) 577-2121 or visit metropolisarts.com.

Folk from DiFranco

Ani DiFranco turned many heads when she bailed on the major-label system in the early 1990s and created her own label, Righteous Babe Records. Now, with the Internet forever altering the music industry and more groups taking control of their music, her decision seems ahead of its time. Ani's latest mix of offbeat folk and alternative rock is called "Red Letter Year."

Ani DiFranco will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Paramount Theatre, 8 E. Galena Blvd., Aurora. $39.50. Call (630) 896-6666 or visit paramountaurora.com.

Still going strong

To those of us who flew the U2 flag in the 1980s, it's incredible to think that the band has been on top of the rock world now for nearly 30 years. Bono and the rest of the Dublin lads are touring in support of "No Line On the Horizon," which garnered some of the best reviews the band has gotten this century.

U2 will play at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, and Sunday, Sept. 13, at Soldier Field in Chicago. $55-$250. Call (312) 235-7000.
