Stroger led with grace and dignity
Former Cook County Board President John H. Stroger was arguably the most influential and powerful African-American politician in Cook County history.
His amiable demeanor, personal magnetism, impeccable loyalty and mastery of building coalitions were the keys to his success.
He empowered African-Americans while also equitably embracing Caucasians, Hispanics, Asians, women, gays, labor unions and people of all faiths and creeds.
His deep concern for the poor and uninsured compelled him to build a high quality and accessible hospital for them.
John Stroger admirably transcended the barriers of race with grace and dignity. He was a groundbreaking political figure.
