Elgin cops seize 9 ounces of cocaine
A downstate couple were arrested Monday when Elgin police seized nearly nine ounces of cocaine, officials said.
Diedra Y. Sanders, 34, of 592 Highland and Courtney Hayes, 26, of 2410 Broadway, both of Alton, were charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance, police said.
The couple's car was stopped for a minor traffic offense at 6:41 p.m. on Route 20 west of Route 25, police said.
When officers walked up to the car, they found the driver, Diedra Sanders, frantically trying to hide a plastic bag containing 38 grams of cocaine in her clothing, police said.
A search of the car then turned up another 210 grams of cocaine.
Police did not know where Sanders and Hayes obtained the cocaine, but said the couple were on their way home to Alton, 15 miles north of St. Louis.
Hayes is currently on parole for a narcotics offense.
Both Sanders and Hayes were held in the Kane County jail on $10,000 bond.
Their next court dates are scheduled for July 23 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
