Illini's Wilson will have surgery Monday

CHAMPAIGN -- Doctors are scheduled to operate on injured Illinois linebacker Martez Wilson on Monday, and he could be playing again by spring.

Illini coach Ron Zook says Wilson is expected to spend anywhere from three to seven months recovering from the operation on his neck. But Zook says the junior middle linebacker could be back on the field as soon as spring football practice in April.

The team announced last week that Wilson is done for the season after suffering a herniated disc in his neck.

Wilson says he isn't sure when he hurt his neck.

Wilson moved to middle linebacker this season. The Illini plan to ask the NCAA for a redshirt season that would give Wilson two more seasons of eligibility.
