Oregon suspends player after sucker punch, threat to fans
EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon has suspended running back LeGarrette Blount for the remainder of season for punching Boise State defensive end Byron Hout after Thursday's loss.
Blount's suspension includes any bowl games. Coach Chip Kelly says he will remain on scholarship.
As Boise State began celebrating on their famous blue turf, Hout yelled in Blount's face and tapped him on the shoulder pad. Before Broncos head coach Chris Petersen could pull Hout away, Blount landed a right to Hout's jaw, knocking him to his knees.
Blount also had to be restrained by police officers from fans heckling him on the way to the locker room after No. 16 Oregon's 19-8 loss to the No. 14 Broncos. No criminal charges were filed.
"I just apologize to anyone watching that," Blount said. "I just apologize to all of our fans and all of Boise's fans. That's something I shouldn't have done. I lost my head."
Hout will not be suspended after taunting Oregon's LeGarrette Blount before getting decked with a punch.
Boise State spokesman Max Corbet told The Associated Press in an e-mail Friday that head coach Chris Petersen won't suspend Hout. Instead, Petersen will spend time with Hout this week to help him learn from what happened.
