Abandoned dog killed outside animal shelter

ALTON -- Workers at an animal shelter in the Mississippi River city of Alton say a dog abandoned outside the property was hit by a vehicle and killed.

Officials say the Chihuahua's death on the road near 5A's Humane Society should demonstrate the hazards of dumping animals on the shelter's grounds when it isn't open.

One of the shelter's workers, Kitty Castelli, says she noticed the dog and tried to catch it, but it ran across the busy street and eventually was hit.
