Mendota edges Aurora Christian in OT
Aurora Christian lost a heartbreaker on its own field Friday night, 37-36 in overtime to Mendota in a matchup of two of the top teams their size in the state.
There were 11 turnovers in the game, including 5 interceptions thrown by Aurora Christian.
The Eagles scored first in overtime but just missed on the 2-point conversion run on a controversial call. Mendota then scored and kicked the extra point to win.
The Eagles' Grayson Roberts was 10 of 23 passing for 113 yards, 3 touchdowns with 3 interceptions. Sheldon Magee went 1-6 with 2 interceptions.
Magee had 77 receiving yards and 3 TDs (11, 55, 2). Dylan Smith also caught a 12-yard score.
John Magee ran for 59 yards and 1 TD, and Sheldon Magee had 71 yards on 6 carries.
Dylan Smith led the defense with 15 tackles. David Benson had 11.
Coach Don Beebe helped get the Eagles into overtime. Down 23-22 late in the fourth quarter, Beebe told the defense to let Mendota score, making it 30-22. Three plays later, the Eagles faced a 4th-and-10 and Roberts hit Sheldon Magee on a 55-yard throw down the middle for a touchdown. The Eagles made the 2-point conversion to force overtime.
