Man arrested after Mundelein bank robbery
A gunman robbed a Mundelein credit union Wednesday but was arrested as he tried to flee the area, police said.
No one was injured in the heist at Consumers Credit Union, 1210 S. Lake St. No shots were fired.
The suspect remained in custody Wednesday afternoon but had not been charged. His name was not released by police.
The bandit had entered the business about 9 a.m., shortly after it opened. He brandished a weapon and demanded money from a teller, Deputy Police Chief Michael O'Brien said.
The robber collected the cash in a plastic bag he brought to the credit union and then left, police said.
Local police were alerted to the stickup as it unfolded by numerous 911 calls, authorities said. As officers arrived, they saw the suspect walk out of the front entrance and flee west through the parking lot.
Officers confronted the robber in a nearby residential area, and he surrendered without resistance, O'Brien said.
"Our officers acted quickly and professionally, and through their actions and quick thinking they were able to make an apprehension without anyone getting hurt," O'Brien said.
Police recovered a handgun and an undetermined amount of cash.
FBI officials and Mundelein police are investigating. Charges are expected to be filed Thursday.
