Comeback frustrates Peavy
MINNEAPOLIS - Think the White Sox are having a rough go? How about Jake Peavy?
On Aug. 24, the Sox' new starting pitcher was making his third rehab start for Class AAA Charlotte and finally feeling like his old self.
"I felt as good as I possibly could at that particular moment," Peavy said Monday. "My velocity was back to where it had been in the past and I was making good, quality pitches.
"And then to have a ball hit right off the tip of your elbow and now struggle to get out there and not being able to compete, it's frustrating. And the team's not doing well right now, so that just adds on to the frustration."
Peavy started for Charlotte on Saturday but had to cut the outing short after his right elbow started swelling up.
The 28-year-old right-hander, acquired in a July 31 trade from the San Diego Padres, had multiple tests Monday and was diagnosed with a bone and muscle bruise.
Peavy's elbow is still swollen from the line drive, but he isn't ready to shut it down and wait for 2010.
"That hasn't been said to me, so I don't know," Peavy said. "We've come this far; we're not going to quit just yet, Hopefully, I'll get healthy and make a few starts for the team.
"Today was a good day. Structurally, my (elbow) looked as good as it could possibly look as far as all the ligaments and stuff like that."
Peavy wasn't able to play catch Monday, but he will try again today or Wednesday.
"The biggest thing is I have to get the fluids out of there," Peavy said. "Obviously, when there's fluid in your elbow, it's going to cause discomfort. I wish it could have hit me in a different place as opposed to the bridge of the elbow, but it happens. It's been a tough little road."
