A place for old computers:
East Dundee is holding an electronics recycling day from 8 a.m. to noon today in the parking lot of Santa's Village, on Route 25 just south of Route 72. The event is only open to residents of Kane County. Computers and peripheral equipment, electronic office equipment, entertainment systems (except speakers), electronic media and books will be accepted. Elgin film festival today:
The first Elgin Short Film Festival will be held at 7 tonight at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin. Admission is $5 and cash prizes will be awarded to the winners. For details or tickets, call (847) 931-5940 or visit hemmens.org.
Book-signing Sunday:
Plainfield writer Tom Hernandez will read from and sign copies of his book, "Chocolate Cows and Purple Cheese" at 2 p.m. Sunday at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave. The book is a collection of 70 essays that he wrote over the last 11 years. It was published in April by IUniverse. Hernandez, the former director of communications for St. Charles School District 303, writes about "life, in all of its myriad facets - family, marriage, parenting, faith, politics - can be funny, frustrating and fulfilling."
See new Geneva school:
The Geneva school district will dedicate the new Fabyan Elementary School at 1 p.m. Sunday. An open house will follow until 3 p.m. The school is at 0S350 Grengs Lane, at the intersection of Fabyan Parkway and South Mill Creek Drive.
Watch for big pavers:
Concrete paving will begin on New Stearns Road, west of Route 25, beginning Monday. Drivers can expect to see large construction equipment entering and leaving Route 25 south of Gilbert Street in South Elgin. This will occur for one or two days.
White House staffer at AU:
The deputy assistant press secretary to ex-President George W. Bush will discuss politics and his White House service at 6 p.m. Monday in Aurora University's Alumni Hall, 1410 Marseillaise Place. Pete Seat spent more than three years on the White House staff working for Tony Snow and Dana Perino. He served as a White House spokesman and organized trips for the White House press corps. His speech is free and sponsored by the university's political science club.
