Seniors invited to 'Ask the Doc' at wellness fair

VNA of Fox Valley will offer its popular Senior Wellness Fair 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2. All members of the community are invited to attend this free event to learn about useful and important services offered to seniors in the Fox Valley area.

This year's Senior Wellness Fair features: flu vaccines, "Ask the Doc" seminars, free health screenings including blood pressure, bone density, depression and diabetes, information and presentations on community services, home safety, and medication safety; tours of the VNA Health Center; and free giveaways and snacks. Patients who have difficulty getting out to visit their doctor can learn about the VNA HouseCalls program. Barbara Welch, VNA's nurse practitioner for the HouseCalls program, will be at the fair to explain how the program works.

The Senior Wellness Fair will take place at VNA of Fox Valley, 400 N. Highland Ave., Aurora on the second floor. No reservations are necessary; this is a free event open to all.

"We're delighted to offer this opportunity once again to seniors in our community," said Dave Koch, VNA Vice President of Patient Services. "It also gives people a great reason to come out to see the VNA Health Center and learn about the benefits of becoming a VNA patient."

The VNA Health Center, also in the 400 N. Highland building, specializes in providing primary health care to seniors. Services include wellness care and annual preventive exams and screenings; treatment of chronic diseases and acute illness; laboratory blood work; bone density testing; digital mammography; and pharmacy services.

VNA accepts new Medicare patients and is the only health facility in the greater Aurora area that offers special medication discounts through the new 340B Program of the federal government. By seeing a VNA physician, seniors can receive discounts on prescriptions drugs that are only available through VNA due to its status as a federally qualified health center. This program can provide discounts of 50 percent or more. In addition, VNA Pharmacy offers $4 generic prescriptions.

Koch noted, "The VNA Health Center will help us keep pace with the unprecedented demands on the health care system to provide area seniors with a broad range of services from primary health care and rehabilitation services to hospice." According to census-related sources, the senior population in Kane, DuPage, and Kendall counties is anticipated to increase 86 percent between 2000 and 2020.
