Hampshire runs past Byron to move to 7-0
Even Hampshire coach Sue Ellett wasn't quite sure how it happened. Hampshire's 5-point lead midway through the third quarter had suddenly expanded to a 20-point margin and the Whip-Purs went on to rout Byron, 64-37, Friday night in girls basketball action.
Chrissy Heine scored 18 points, Alex Dumoulin 14 and Cassie Dumoulin 12 as the Whip-Purs improved to 7-0 in the Big Northern crossover at Hampshire.
Hampshire led 34-29 when Jessica Van Dorin's 3-pointer ignited a methodical 11-2 run to close out the third quarter. The run continued in the fourth quarter with the Whips outscoring the Tigers 10-2 to start the period. A driving layup by Cassie Dumoulin made it 53-31 with just over 5 minutes left.
Cassie Dumoulin scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half to join Heine and her sister Alex as double-figure scorers.
"When the three of them are firing on all cylinders ... I think we went from having about 35 points and I look up and its at 52 in a hurry, and I don't know how they accumulated all those points in there," said Ellett.
"I think we just got a little more patient, and Chrissy and Cassie and Alex decided to let all five kids touch the ball and then we would get some openings. The first time at home, we were a little jacked up, a little jittery."
The jitteriness was noticeable early as Hampshire fell behind by 5 points in the first quarter. The Whip-Purs turned the ball over 10 times in that period, but just 7 the rest of the game.
"Coach motivates us very well," said Heine, who also had 7 assists, 3 rebounds and a block. "She really wants to make you play harder, not only for yourself but for the team."
Van Dorin finished with 9 points, all on 3-pointers, and Kelsey Anderson scored 7. Cassie Dumoulin also added 11 rebounds and 3 assists for the Whip-purs, who open Big Northern East play Friday at Harvard.
Heine's 18 points gave her 981 for her career. She is trying to become the first Hampshire girl to score 1,000 since her sister Jackie, who went on to a successful college career at Saint Xaiver, the same school Chrissy Heine will play at next year.
Emily Lehne led Byron (3-3) with 14 points.
