Residents win exclusion from Glen Ellyn tax district

A group of Glen Ellyn residents who want their properties removed from a new taxing district are expected to get their wish at a board meeting tonight.

The village board is expected to vote to remove 299 townhouses and condominiums from a special service area that is aimed at raising revenue for downtown commercial properties. The move comes after a lengthy public hearing and a workshop on the issue.

Residents who were opposed to having their homes included argued that they see no more benefit from the downtown than others in the village and therefore should not have to pay the tax.

The board will vote during a meeting set for 8 p.m. at the village hall, 535 Duane St.

The district is one of six proposed to replace expiring special service areas. The money generated from the tax districts is generally reinvested into downtown stores.

Residents say they would be unfairly contributing to a fund that does not benefit them, while others merely a block away will not have to pay.

At a meeting earlier this month, Trustee Jim Comerford was the first to bring up the possibility of removing the properties.

Several association representatives attended both the workshop and the meeting to voice their concerns.

Village President Mark Pfefferman said the change in projected revenue will be made up by including several apartment complexes and increased revenue from the DuPage Medical Group's newly redeveloped clinic.
