Motorola's Cliq phone to go on sale in stores Nov. 2
Motorola Inc.'s new Cliq phone, its first based on Google Inc.'s Android software, will go on sale in stores Nov. 2, providing competition for the Apple Inc. iPhone and Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry.
Existing customers of carrier T-Mobile USA Inc. can pre-order the phone from Oct. 19, T- Mobile said today in a statement. It will cost $199.99 with a two-year agreement.
Motorola is rebuilding its phone division around the Android operating system. The business lost more than $4 billion since 2007 as consumers opted for competitors' phones, pushing Motorola to fourth place in worldwide shipments of mobile phones.
The touch-screen Cliq, which has a 5-megapixel camera and a keyboard that slides out horizontally, will be followed by another Android model this year, Motorola has said.
Motorola, based in Schaumburg, climbed 4 cents to $8.41 at 4 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have gained 90 percent this year.
