Learn about world of owls at nature program
Want to see for yourself what this wildlife communication is all about? The Kane County Forest Preserve District offers several naturalist-guided programs this holiday season. For those nocturnally inclined folks, it will hold an owl program from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27 at Tekakwitha Woods Nature Center in St. Charles.
"Whooo Goes There?" will begin with an indoor introduction to the world of owls, followed by a hike in the dark woods to call owls and hopefully see some, too. In addition, there will be two tracking programs called "Tracks and Trails." During these guided hikes, you'll look, listen and even sniff for animal signs and the subtle ways that wild animals communicate.
The first hike will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 29 at Big Rock Forest Preserve. On Tuesday, Dec. 30, the hike will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. at Tyler Creek in Elgin. To register for these programs, please call (847) 741 -8350.
To learn more about coyotes, foxes and native wildlife, check out Tekakwitha Woods Nature Center, 35W076 Villa Marie Road in St. Charles. The nature center is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
There is no charge for visiting the center. It's a wonderful winter destination for anyone with cabin fever. The center features interactive displays, hands-on activities and a wildlife viewing room. Staffed by naturalists and trained volunteers, the nature center is a great source of information about native wildlife. For information call (847) 741-8350.
