Elgin's Fiesta Salsa canceled

The sagging economy has claimed another Elgin festival.

Organizers of Fiesta Salsa have pulled the plug on this year's event because of lagging sponsorships and a scheduling conflict at civic center plaza, an area between city hall and the Hemmens Cultural Center.

Hispanic Heritage Coalition President Juan Figueroa said several major sponsors from past events didn't sign up. Also, organizers moved the event from Festival Park to the plaza in an attempt to save money. But other event there, such as a wedding, made it logistically impossible.

"We were not able to host it there. We had no other choice than to cancel," Figueroa said.

The group still plans to host "A Taste of Fiesta Salsa" from 1 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, at La Quebrada, 50 N. Spring St., Elgin.

Earlier this year, city budget cuts torpedoed two festivals: the Fox River Festival of Balloons and Rib Fest.
