Elgin man accused of selling bootlegged DVDs
An Elgin man was busted Wednesday for selling pirated DVDs to an undercover officer that featured several new releases, police said today.
Warnell Wright, 49, of the 500 block of Cookane Avenue, has been charged with unlawful use of unidentified sound recordings, a Class 4 felony that carries up to three years in prison and $25,000 in fines.
An undercover agent, acting on a citizen complaint, at 2:57 p.m. went to a shop in the 600 block of Wing Street and bought four DVDs from Wright that included the following five titles: "Funny People," "The Goods," "World's Greatest Dad," "The Hangover" and "Inglorious Basterds," police said.
The officer paid a total of $20 for the recently released flicks, which a representative from the Motion Picture Association of America verified were unauthorized, police said.
Detectives approached Wright at his neighboring place of business and identified themselves as police. Police say Wright turned over his remaining supply to officers, but reports did not indicate how many DVDs he had in stock.
Wright was released from the Elgin jail Thursday morning after posting $1,000.
He is due in court Sept. 21 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
