Briefs: Cardboard boat race

Fox Valley United Way is looking for teams to participate in its 5th annual What Floats Your Cardboard Boat Race! Aug. 25. Both human- and mechanically-powered boats, all made of cardboard, can compete. The race starts at Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Illinois Ave., Aurora, and ends at North River Street Park or as far as the boats will float. Trophies will be given, and every boater will receive a medal and be treated to a free lunch catered by 5 B's Catering. For details, see www.nwfoxvalley.org.

Safety Day at Mooseheart:

Children can watch fire and rescue demonstrations, see firefighting equipment up close and win prizes Aug. 25 at the Kane County Safe Kids Safety Day at the Mooseheart Field House, west of Route 31 in Batavia. The event is free and runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Personnel from more than 50 emergency areas from across the region will participate. Call (630) 966-2254.

Keep kids safe:

Kane County Safe Kids' Safety Day is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Mooseheart Field House, Mooseheart Road west of Route 31, between Batavia and North Aurora. There will be fire and rescue demonstrations, the chance to meet emergency workers, a touch-a-truck area, safety seat checks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., booths about safety, prizes, coloring books and stickers. Sugar Grove needs crafters:

Crafters are needed for Sugar Grove's 50th anniversary celebration. The show will feature handmade arts and crafts from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 8 in Volunteer Park behind John Shields Elementary School, 85 S. Main St. in Sugar Grove as part of a weekend celebration. This is a juried show. Crafters are asked to mail three photos of their work with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Kadie O'Connor, 20. S. Hankes Road, Aurora, IL 60506.
